Assam(Asom, Axom) is a state of large geographical and cultural diversity, often a surprise for tourists who are expecting to find a state mostly known for it’s tea plantations.

Wildlife Tourism

Assam is known for it's wildlife. There are five National Parks in Assam which are Kaziranga, Manas, Orang, Nameri & Dibru-Saikhowa. There are also many wildlife and bird sanctuaries here.

Kaziranga is a World Heritage Site. It is famous worldwide for it's hundred year old conservation history. It was awarded the best tourist friendly park in our country. It is the home of the world famous one-horn rhinoceros and a large variety of buffalo, elephant, tiger, etc.

Manas, with an area of about 500 sq. kms was declared a National Park in 1990. It is famous for its Tiger Project, migratory birds, elephant , buffalo and Golden Langurs etc.

Nameri was declared a National Park in 1988. The Dibru Saikhowa and Bhalukpong in Sonitpur district are famous for wild life and eco-tourism and is a very popular destination for the nature lovers.

Orang is the oldest game reserve of the State just on the northern bank of river Brahmaputra with an area of 78.80 sq. kms.. It is important breeding ground for a variety of fishes.

Dibru Saikhowa is a National Park as well as a Biosphere Reserve having an area of 340 sq. kms. in Tinsukia district. It offers enormous potential for tourism related activities.


Cultural & Heritage Tourism
Majuli, in the midst of the Brahmaputra, is considered to be the largest riverine island measuring about 2860 Sq. Km. It is a major centre of pilgrimage, propagation of Vaisnavism and a major spot for Heritage tourism which has no parallel in our country.

Pilgrimage Tourism
As a centre for multi-religions, Assam is unique. The State has a number of Temples, Vaishnavite Sattras, Mosques, Churches, Buddhists Monasteries & Gurudwaras which are historically & mythologically important & famous.

The shrines and places of worship built by the ancient rulers of Assam such as the Kamakhya temple(Guwahati), Umananda temple(Guwahati), Nabagraha temple(Guwahati), Haigriba-Madhaba Mandir, Poa Mecca at Hajo, Siva Dol at Sivasagar etc. are major pilgrimage centres. The Vaishnavite shrines known as 'satras' at Majuli, Barpeta, Batadrawa (the birth place of Sri Sri Sankardeva) etc. are also important centres of culure and pilgrimage.


River Tourism
In Assam, the concept of River Tourism is synonymous with Brahmaputra Tourism. The mighty Brahmaputra, one of the biggest rivers in the world, traverses through Assam for about 850 kms. It is not just a mighty river but the life-line of the people of Assam. Its vast riverfront and river ways provide ample opportunities for River Tourism.

Eco & Adventure Tourism
Opportunities galore for the adventure & water sports lovers at Jia Bhoroli (Sonitpur) & also Subansiri river (Lakhimpur-Dhemaji).
